My LOA is from month to month and my boss has been extremely instrumental in keeping the LOA going.
Last Saturday morning, I woke up to find 3 e-mails from co-workers in the US. One of them was from my boss asking me to call her on Monday, Apr 14 at 4pm (PDT). The text of her e-mail also mentioned for me not to worry and that I still had my position. I kind of had a clue that this call was to tell me of more layoffs (or as they now call it in the politically correct world... Job Discontinued or JD for short). I went on to the next e-mail and it was from a co-worker in NY. In his e-mail, he kind of revealed, even though not by names, who were JDed. His terminology got me a little confused but I kind of got the idea.... and basically understood that my boss was getting JDed.
I woke up bright and early this morning to call my boss. 4pm PDT being 7am here.
I was on the phone for my boss to tell me she was getting JDed. She is about 5 years to retirement. She has been with the company for 22 years. She would be someone that I would describe as "towing the company line" on a daily basis. She has saved our butts (mine included, especially with my LOA) numerous times. And neither she nor any of the people who got JDed last Friday from our training department had caused any of the mess the company is in today. In fact, from the classes we deliver, we teach otherwise. We facilitate classes that stress on "credit quality" when taking loan applications. We pride ourselves that we have stringent guidelines. However, some people way up the chain of command fucked up and now... we pay the price.
Corporate America.... sigh....
I offered to trade places with her which drew a reply of laughter. I would do it. Unfortunately, neither she nor her boss, nor her boss' boss has any control over this process.
Of the 7 people I know of on the West Coast team that got JDed, one is a father of 2 children under the ages of 5. One is a mother of 3 children between 8-16. Three (my boss included) are within 5-7 years of retirement.
I rest my case.
